The story of An Bhean Uisce

Told to me, Yvonne Lawton (Sanders) by my mother Bernadette Sanders (Flanagan), as was told to her by her mother Nancy Flanagan (Shanahan)

Some time ago around the nineteen hundreds, at the crack of dawn two fishermen headed out to the mouth of the river Blackwater to fish for the day. It was a cold day, but the fishing was good and they decided to stay out in the bay a little longer than usual. dusk set in a little earlier and with it a rolling fog had become thick  and all-encompassing and they could no longer find their way. Fear began to set in. One of the fishermen noticed what looked like a light moving around in the water. The light began to move towards the surface, and from the water rose a spectral being. she was beautiful. Light danced all around her. She had a kind face, and smiled at both of the fishermen. Instead of being afraid, they felt safe. She said nothing, but pointed with her hand. They knew she was guiding them home. They headed in the direction that she had been pointing to. Soon they were home and back on dry land again. They knew without a doubt An Bhean Uisce had guided them home.©
